Pallbearers can also play a special role in the journey, carrying or accompanying the coffin at different stages of the service and providing family members and friends with an opportunity to be personally involved in the farewell. Pallbearing is a long-standing funeral tradition that has evolved over centuries and remains a meaningful way of honouring someone as they are laid to rest. Historically, the term “pallbearer” referred to those who carried or held the pall – a cloth placed over the coffin – before becoming associated with those who carry the coffin itself.

Today, pallbearers are often family members, close friends or other significant people chosen to accompany the deceased on their final journey. Typically, four to six pallbearers carefully carry the coffin at key moments of the funeral, such as into and out of the service or to the graveside. Taking on this role can be a deeply personal gesture, symbolising respect, love and the privilege of accompanying someone through the final part of their farewell.

Before the service, the funeral director will explain where to stand, how the coffin will be carried and what to expect at each stage, so there is no need for previous experience. Pallbearers work together to carefully lift and carry the coffin, following the guidance of the funeral team throughout. If someone would like to be involved but is unable or uncomfortable carrying the coffin, there may also be other ways they can accompany or participate in this important part of the farewell.
